I love surprises in the mail and after seeing me tweet about how excited I get when unexpected books pop through for review, Jennie Maizels decided she would send me a little something herself.
So last week we opened a mystery package and nestled inside were two tins of her brand new clothes plasters designs (so so cool, especially the birds now in the shop!). Besides the clothes plasters was her brand new My Pop-Up Body Book which was immediately whisked out of my hands and claimed by Milla as her own.
The book is a brilliant introduction to to the body, how it works, grows and repairs. Each page takes on a different aspect of bodily function starting with babies and how we began. Each page has a large central pop-up or out which has moving parts and layers to discover. The pop-ups are surrounded by mini-books, wheels to turn, things to pull all painstakingly illustrated and lettered by Jennie Maizels. The level of detail and interaction is astounding from the physiologically accurate diagrams right down to being able to move a poo along the colon (you know your kids will LOVE that).
The information is given in small bite sized pieces which are pitched perfectly for pre-school and key stage one children. It is the kind of book which can be enjoyed on more than one level, at the moment Milla is fascinated by the structures and simple explanations for how things work. In a few years I can imagine she will be reading the facts for herself and applying them in school. This book makes early understanding of biology fun and takes the mystery out of the subject for children and parents alike.
My Pop-Up Body Book by Jennie Maizels and William Petty. I already have my eye on the rest of her fun learning books for when Milla starts school!
