Having found a glaring gap in the market for fresh, modern knitting patterns for children; sisters Katrina and Helena Rosen set about plugging the hole. MillaMia is their answer to the modern crafter’s desire for contemporary knitting patterns for babies and young children. Launched in 2009 their product range includes two pattern books, a full range of luscious Merino Wool, gift sets and all of the extras you need to complete the designs.

They have released two pattern books, The Close Knit Gang and Bright Young Things both filled with wearable children’s clothing influenced by the aesthetic of their native Sweden. The Close Knit Gang is a collection of 18 classic knits brought up to date. They stick to the neutral colour palate in the photography but of course you can change the colours to your taste. I have a copy of Bright Young Things which contains 20 patterns for funky knitted clothes all designed with colour in mind. You really are spoiled for choice when it comes to the selection on offer and their boys’ designs are as strong as their girls’ designs. I have lent this book to several knitters so they can assess the writing for me and everyone agreed that the patterns are clearly laid out and easy to translate from words to wool. I haven’t tried a pattern yet (the pressure of my first ever pattern being reported is too great!) but I will be making one of the dresses for next winter. MillaMia have made buying supplies for their patterns simple: you select the pattern from their collection, choose the size and everything is ready to add to your shopping basket.

Having bumped into the MillaMia girls at a baby show I have been able to check out the finished products first hand. The yarn is scrummy and makes the clothing feel really high quality. What really grabbed my attention were the knitting kits which I think are the perfect gift for an expectant Mama.

The books are £14.95 each. Yarn for patterns in the books starts at £13.50 for a scaf and goes up to £45+ for the dresses depending on sizes or £63 for the teddy blanket (pictured above). Kits start at £22.50 and include everything you need including the pattern, yarn and needles all beautifully presented in a gift box.

I am in love – will be taking my very basic knitting abilities to town on the patterns :0)

  • Gosh. How I’d love to be a passionate knitter, knitting away happily on park benches, at bus stops, on the sofa. Chances are I am rather sticking the needles in my eyes and strangle myself with the yarn.

    The woollen coat looks gorgeous!

Gorgeous – really special ! Wish I could knit better but I guess that makes the items more exclusive and desirable.

I think there is a definite niche for a talented knitter to make these for those of us who can’t!

    Bambino Knitting Club anyone?
