Inspiration: Striped Floor Boards

| July 6, 2010 | 5 Comments

Shared sibling rooms are often a necessity but striking the balance between unified and individual is a tricky line to walk. This room is a superb example of how a small space can be divided to accommodate two children.

The most obvious and stunning feature of the room is the floor boards which have been painted in four shades of blue. I love the effect of the darker bands either side of the pale blue – like a dividing line with style. The bedside units echo the stripes and give some matchy action while the beds really stamp some individuality for each child. By using such different styles the room doesn’t feel like an identikit shared room but has a distinct feeling of different personalities. From what I can see it looks like there is space on either side of the beds which provides to opportunity for some private space without much effort.

The colour theme of white, reds, blues and greys is carried through all key pieces including the bedding (the bed on the left is decked out in Lulu and Nat). By limiting the colours the room escapes being overwhelming but is still colourful rather than neutral. I love the Tim Fishlock print on the wall and the dirty footprints on the floor!

  1. Great to see a style inspiration post, BGs. Keep em coming! Where’s the bed on the left from – looks like an Original Beadstead Company one – non?

  2. Those floorboards are fabulous – so striking yet easy to do – the lines are built in for you! *Love* the print as well.

I love the floorboards too. Would you use eggshell paint or a special floorpaint to create this effect?

Great idea, my sisters shared a room and were forever arguing about where the dividing line was. We’ve got painted floorboards in the bathroom, I’d definitely advise a special floor paint.
