Top Tips to Green Your baby: Buying Wood? Make it FSC!

July 1, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Tidy Books Childrens BookcaseWood has long been the nursery material of choice for parents concerned with the environmental impact of plastic. Wood is not just more pleasing to look at but much more environmentally friendly if it’s FSC certified.

The FSC certification ensures that the wood you buy has been forested responsibly, allowing for sustainable growth.

Look for FSC-certified wood to find toys that will last for generations unlike cheaper plastic stuff. For the little ones, untreated, unpainted wood is safer to chew unlike plastics that may contain PVC. When your child outgrows them, they can be passed on to a relative, friend, or even sold on eBay or Craig’s List to give it a second life.

Here’s my top pick FSC certified must-have for your nursery:

The Tidy Books bookcase. Now here’s a very clever idea – a great way to keep all those baby books together in one place. Our Tidy Books bookcase is now six years old, but still going strong. They start from £87.

The brains behind Tidy Books is Parisian Geraldine Grandidier – she has used her professional woodworking skills formerly used in her previous role as a violin maker – to come up with something stylish, practical, yet environmentally-friendly.

New this month is the “Bunk Bed Buddy” which can be fixed to a wall next to a top bunk, so kids have somewhere to pop their books at night (rather than chuck them over the edge….)
