Doodle Tablecloth

| April 7, 2011 | 6 Comments

I can’t decide whether I think this is a brilliant idea or a terrible one. Encouraging your children to draw on the table? Hmm. Foolish? Actually, I love it. Would save on the myriad of paper scraps cluttering up my kitchen at least. It goes like this. Draw or write on the cotton graph-paper pattern tablecloth while dining. Wash (in the machine at 40 degrees) and repeat. £35 from Stitch Design Works plus £5 for the pens

£55 from Cox & Cox, plus £7 for the pens. This pricing and source of the tablecloth was updated 10th April 2011.

I love this idea but surely £55 is very expensive when crayola make fantastically good washable felt tip pens that can draw on a much cheaper tablecloth…

    • Lucy says:

I guess you’re paying for the design. Plus, those ‘washable’ felt tips take a whole lot of scrubbing to get off toddler hands (speaking from experience) so goodness knows whether they’d come out of a tablecloth…

Hi Lucy Giffen – I have updated the post to reflect a significantly reduced price as invariably while we do celebrate design and aren’t averse to investment pieces, where we can find it cheaper we’ll always go with that one.

Just got a 2.5m version of this for £40 including the pens at Wealden Fair. Much like the washable pens, they are colourfast on kids hands and have taken some scrubbing, they are not the most resilient either. Although the company do say they are bringing out hard pressure ones this month (my 2yo has already pushed one nib in – it is back out now)

I do think you are paying for the design/idea, can’t see that the fabric is coated, but the kids have absolutely love it and they are eating dinner so they can draw afterwards (for now). Not washed it yet, so will let you know how that goes.

One downside is that I have had to keep the coated fabric tablecloth underneath, as the pens were going through the fabric and colouring the oiled table underneath.
