Shapes, colours and numbers fabric books
I just can’t believe these cloth books from Shak-Shuka (€22.00 each) were originally put out in the Twenties: the illustration just looks so vibrant and modern. I guess that’s timeless design for you. Plus, those chocolate biscuits look like Oreos to me. Are they another example of timeless design? Three titles are available: Colours, Shapes, [...]
Alfie’s first birthday presents: books
April 29, 2010 by Lucy · Leave a Comment
As a self-confessed word nerd and bookworm, I’m delighted that Alfie seems to love books (even if sometimes it is just to chew on them). We look at about four or five a day together and current favourites are Rod Campbell’s lift-the-flap lovely Dear Zoo, Peggy Rathman’s retro Good Night Gorilla and the pop-up delight that [...]
In My Nest Board book
September 4, 2009 by Natalie · 2 Comments
As soon as I saw In My Nest, a board book written and illustrated by award winning designer Sarah Gillingham and the super cool Lorena Siminovich of Petit Collage (wall decor and stationary), it was click click time for baby Nia – any ‘ole excuse to use up some vouchers, eh? Combining beautiful illustrations with [...]
Victor & Susie
April 3, 2009 by Lucy · Leave a Comment
Victor & Susie is a children’s book about friendship and compassion, illustrated entirely with letters and punctuation marks. As a self-confessed big softie and word geek, Brighten the Corners’ heartwarming tale went straight onto my wish list. Although the 72 pages of recovered paper are sleek enough to sit happily on mum and dad’s art [...]
Spotlight on… Tate Gallery’s Range of Children’s Gifts
February 10, 2009 by Guest Post · 2 Comments
Elli writes… The shop at Tate Modern is always a good bet for off-beat gifts. I’ve picked up some lovely bounty there, from stylish mugs to funny postcards, quirky jewellery and lots more in between. There’s plenty of eye candy on offer including some good ideas for children’s gifts. I should declare an interest here [...]
‘Urban Babies Wear Black’ Board Book
January 21, 2009 by Guest Post · Leave a Comment
Elli writes… I recently received Urban Babies Wear Black as a gift and it made me feel cool again. Yes, it’s a board book. No, board books are not cool. But trust me, this one pulls it off. For a start, the idea is great: urban babies enjoy art galleries, drink latte (!) and love [...]
Charley Harper Board Books
January 13, 2009 by Guest Post · Leave a Comment
Elli writes…A confession: unwrapping fabulous but unexpected baby gifts leaves me with mixed feelings. A spontaneous ‘Wow, I love it!’ followed by an unspoken ‘But why didn’t I already know about it?’. This is vain, I know. But it describes how I felt when I opened two beautiful board books given to my baby daughter [...]

November 19, 2008 by Kat · 3 Comments
Kat writes… There is something truly special about Oliver Jeffers’ children’s books. The stories are simple and touching but what brings them to life is his delightful illustrations. I am pleased to tell you that you can get your hands on four of these illustrations in the form of limited edition prints. There are two [...]
There’s a House Inside My Mummy
Natalie writes… When I told a friend that I was pregnant, she was raving about a book that I should buy to read to the bambino which could get her prepared for the arrival of ‘baby 2′. She couldn’t remember the name but yesterday when I was reading excerpts from Louise Redknapp’s recent blog post [...]
Andy Warhol’s Colors by Susanna Rubin
August 7, 2008 by Kat · Leave a Comment
Kat writes… I must admit to being dubious when I first saw this online. I thought it may be too gimmicky or not really child-friendly. Luckily I saw it a shop the other day and opened it up. Strong block printed lettering narrates the iconic and colourful pictures. Aside from the cows, which are shown [...]
This Little Piggy Went To Prada…
July 30, 2008 by Guest Post · Leave a Comment
What a fab baby shower gift this would make for the ultimate style-conscious mummy. This Little Piggy Went to Prada comes in hardback in a luscious pink, faux suede cover with the traditional nursery rhymes given a modern tongue-in-cheek slant, accompanied by the exquisite illustrations. At the back are the correct traditional nursery rhymes for [...]
Gallop! A Scanimation Picture Book
Natalie writes… I saw this recently at Bubble and even for me at 30 years old (almost 31…booo!) I was quite taken with it as it vaguely reminded me of a toy I played with in my ‘youth’… The book features a new technology called ‘Scanimation’ which makes the pictures move and come to life. [...]
Millie Moo by Roger Priddy
July 11, 2008 by Kat · Leave a Comment
Kat writes… I like a touch and feel book as much as the next Mama, I just wish they were a little more…interesting. Millie Moo is anything but dull. Follow the crazy cow around the farm yard as she tries to find her chums. On the way she meets some far out characters like the [...]
