Summer Project: Butterfly Garden

| July 18, 2011 | 2 Comments

With the holidays on the horizon I’m on the hunt for some projects for Milla and Monty. With sunflowers proving to be a bit of a garden disaster I’ve been looking for inspiration. When I saw this post on Scented Sweetpeas I was instantly in love.

You can buy a kit with everything you need to ‘grow’ your own butterflies. You will see them grow from caterpillars, to chrysalis, watching them hatch and releasing them into your garden. It comes with a pop up habitat, live caterpillars, caterpillar container and food all for £16.67 from Insect Lore.

Having watched frog spawn hatch, grow and metamorphose into frogs at playgroup I know Milla would love this. The potential for related activities is huge from The Very Hungry Caterpillar to art to science you can build activities around this or just enjoy the process.

  1. My butterfly obsessed 7 year old has one of these kits and absolutely loves it. You can use it year after year by buying new caterpillars, and the kids love watching them grow and change. Highly recommended.

  2. Julie says:

Kat, Our boys received one kit each from a dear friend, although upon opening the kit, I decided that she would not be ‘dear’ for very much longer! We received our caterpillars – 20 in total – in the kits although I understand that in some instances only vouchers are included in the box allowing you to send for the bugs at your leisure.
I was sceptical, if not a little grossed out, and you really need a macho man to transfer the chrisalids from the little pots to the hatching chamber (If the macho man is unavailable, I recommend a gargantuan G&T!) as they tremble to ward of predators!
Anyway, we had great results and the boys were able to handle the butterflies prior to release. Infact the butterflies were reluctant to fly away from the children.
