The design of modern cots and cot beds has improved immeasurably in the last few years and parents find themselves spoiled for choice when it comes to where their bambino will sleep at night. I was especially excited to see the newest addition to the market as not only is it beautifully designed it is made in England and free from nasty chemicals.
The Ryeland Cot Bed is a sleek design which lasts from birth to (at least) five with very little waste. From birth it is a cot with adjustable base when your child is ready to transition to a junior bed the sides of the cot are used to create a frame for the bed and a sleeping platform for the mattress. The curved sides will keep your little one safely in the bed and look too cosy for words. The bed construction is 100% Birch Ply which does not contain formaldehyde, VOCs or other preservatives commonly found in furniture. This is one of the most appealing parts for me as I have always been concerned about what my children are breathing in while they sleep.
There are a range of finishes available and I am rather partial to the oak and white mix (below right). The mattress is made from Welsh wool, organic coir, natural latex and covered in organic cotton.
It is currently available for pre-order and due out in April/May 2010. The best price I found for it is £695 from Funky Kids Furniture which includes the mattress, delivery and construction – that’s right, someone else will be wrestling with the flat pack!
