A classic story from Hans Christian Andersen the Princess and the Pea is a trend on the rise. Something about the oh-so-delicate princess and her sleeping arrangements has captured the collective consciousness and she is everywhere. There are countless books telling the original story but for a stylish modern reworking Lauren Child is your woman. In a collaboration with photographer Polly Borland the scenes were reportedly staged inside a dolls house. RRP £6.99 Amazon £4.99

If you are feeling crafty then you can incorporate this theme easily. This Princess and the Pea embroidery pattern (above left) is a sampler meaning you are encouraged to try lots of different stitches. It costs just $5 and arrives in your inbox as a PDF file.Heather Ross’s latest fabric collection, Far, Far Away is a collaboration with Japanese designers Kokka. One of the designs is the Princess and the Pea (above right) which comes in several colourways. I don’t know of a UK supplier (leave a comment if you do) but I have always had great service from Fabric Worm where you will find it on the Kokka page for $8.50 per half yard. This fabric would make so many projects extra special.

Decorating is made easy with gorgeous fabric wall stickers by Helen Dardik from Chocovenyl from £24.99 (above left). If you want to cover an entire wall then this Princess and the Pea Wallpaper Panel by Sarah Hardaker (above right) is just the job. Behind the picture is a wall sized handwritten version of the tale. It measures 130cm wide and can be sized to fit walls from 190 – 250cm in height. This ready made mural costs £125 from Not on The High Street.

Haba make excellent toys and this Sleepy Princess and the Pea (above left) game is multi-award winning. It is a balancing game for 1 – 4 players aged 3+. £18.75 from Tickety Boo!

My final and absolute favourite selection is Maileg’s Princess and the Pea (above right) a beautiful solid wood bed, selection of mattresses, quilt, pillow, princess, pea and story book. The bed is 30 x 30 x 12 cm making it a substantial size to play with. I’ve had my hands on one of these and can vouch for it as a superior product which is just as well because at £57.50 you’ll want it to be. Available at The Chic Country Home.
