Nameberry - the unique baby name guide by the world_s leading experts

Choosing a name is not always easy. I know some people who have their names chosen from many years ago, but for a lot of us, especially if we have a thing about individual style, choosing a name becomes a major task. Last year I raved about Nameberry (see my previous post), an online guide to unique names compiled by the some of the biggest name experts around. Get a daily email for inspiration (or giggles) plus they have list upon list upon list of names under all sorts of themes and it’s far more exciting than getting name blindness from trawling an A-Z of names book.

They’ve recently done a feature on 2010 Baby Names: The Hottest Trends. Now do allow some ‘creativity’ for the fact that it’s an American site because they do their names very differently at times, for instance a lot of people use surnames for first names and spelling traditional names with different letters (C names spelt with a K for instance), but it’s great for getting a feel for what’s hot and some inspiration.

A sample of some of the trends:

‘Economical Names’ – The credit crunch seems to have us skimping on letters, with us using nicknames and short versions as names. Apparently ‘Jack’ is number one name here, ‘Tom’ in France, and others include Bob and Joe, and for girls it’s using names and adding ‘ie’, like Gracie, Ellie, and Maisie.

Retro Trend – Well you know we love retro here at BG! Think Raymond, Adele, Dorothy, Florence, Marion, and…Harold.

Most fashionable consonant – ‘L’ – Lola, Layla, Lily, Lulu, and Tallulah

E is the new ‘It’ vowel – Ethan, Evangeline, and Eliot.

Biggest culture influence is Twilight which is pushing Edward up the hot list, although maybe after Jedward it’s not so popular…

Bird Names – Unsurprising after Nicole Richie named her son Sparrow. Others include Lark, Wren, and Hawk.

A great read, check out the full list.
