Mini Micro Scooter
Ever since Natalie wrote about Micro Scooters waaaay back in 2008 they have been in the back of my mind as the must have scooter. In our village children whizz down the road to play group, arriving giggling and out of breath with excitement. A few ‘school gate’ chats and I was in no doubt that they are popular for a reason – they rock. Before long Milla had acquired a Micro Scooters catalogue and was bringing it out at regular intervals proclaiming that “Maybe one day I could have a scooter like Anna does and mine might be a red one.” sheeeesh! So when Micro Scooters said they would like to send us a Mini Micro Scooter and that it could be a red one she was over the moon.
The Mini Micro Scooter is a three wheeled T-bar scooter. With two wheels at the front it stands alone and won’t tip up when your child takes their hands off the bar or shifts their balance. It is steered completely by balance so you lean left and the wheels bear to the left and you turn. The wheels are like very large inline skate or skateboard wheels with bearings. The board is textured to provide grips and the handles have chunky rubber grips which are easy to hold onto. The metal T-bar slots into the board with one simple click (talk about easy set up) and also comes apart with no fuss which is handy for packing in the car or slipping under the pushchair. You can buy spare parts and I am assured by the play group Papas that maintenance is very easy.
From a child’s point of view: Getting to grips with riding the scooter was one of those challenges that filled Milla with pride at how grown up she was. Once she had got over her initial nervousness at getting on and actually scooting, Milla was quick to pick up her moves. When she started out she had a tendency to veer off to the left but an afternoon scooting around a basketball court gave her the space she needed to figure out a straight line without worrying about crashing into anything. We took it along to the zoo with us and Milla took it in turns with her chum to ride the scooter. As a slightly more physical child he picked up the surfing style much faster and was riding one handed subtly maneuvering the scooter within a couple of hours. Watching my girl confidently ride off ahead of me leaves me with only one regret – that I didn’t buy one sooner. At 15 months old and still a wobbly walker Monty is already starting to ride the scooter around our house and I know it won’t be long before he’s speeding off into the distance as well.
From a Mama’s point of view: I love products which harness the joy of physical activity and the Mini Micro Scooter has certainly fulfilled that brief. Now Milla is getting more confident and quicker the pace of our walks has picked up which is definitely good for my fitness! I have had a couple of heart in mouth moments watching her zoom along but thankfully the brake is easy to use and effective. When she’s not riding you can break it down and pop in the buggy basket or it sits quite happily across the top of my Phil & Teds. It is also worth mentioning that they provide packs to be sold at school fundraisers so if you don’t have the time (or inclination) to bake cakes you can set up a Micro Scooter stall and raise money the easy way.
Verdict: In short – we love! It is the perfect third birthday gift and one which will give you huge value for money in terms of cost per use. A well deserved 5/5.
Mini Micro Scooters come in standard colours of pink and blue for £47.95 and are currently available in three limited edition colours of red, green and yellow for £54.95. They are recommended from ages 3 – 5 years. You can buy accessories including helmets, bells, bags and the very cool frog lights. For older children their is the Maxi Micro Scooter for ages 6+

We have a mini (daughter had since just 2yrs) and a Maxi for our 6yr old. They aren’t cheap but I can honestly say they are the BEST toy we have ever purchased and cannot recommend them enough. They are great fun and a blessing on the school run.

I love these! We are thinking of getting one for my son as a big brother present when the new baby is born. He will think he’s the bees knees and also not care too much about passing over his pram to the new baby we hope! He will be 2 1/2 years. Do you think that a 2 year old would get frustrated and it will cause tears? And is it better to hold off and wait and get it for his 3rd birthday instead? What is the main reason behind the 3 year old age, is it physical ie height of the handle bars or more devlopmental as in balance an co ordination of the child? Any advice would be appreciated!
We got one of these for our daugther when she was 2.5yrs and she took to it straight away. Ranks as a favourite toy without a doubt. They are very popular where we live – every second child has a pink or a blue one and it gets a bit confusing in the park so we pimped it with a different coloured brake and handle bars

I agree with Milly, the Micro Scooters site does say that although the age on the box is three they can be enjoyed earlier if you think they are ready.
