Lullaby by Sophie Barker

February 22, 2010 by Kat · 4 Comments

When I had my first baby I bought Lullaby by Sophie Barker and listening to the opening bars of the record still takes me back to the first months of Motherhood. I was reminded of it when reading about the campaign to Save the Lullaby on Noble Savage.

Lullaby is a collection of traditional nursery songs and rhymes sung by Sophie Barker of Zero 7. Her gentle voice and the melodic arrangements of the songs make for a very relaxing listen. The whole effect is could be described as the audio version of being gently buffed by cotton wool which is far from the obnoxious strains of many nursery rhyme recordings. Traditional rhymes and songs are central to early language development and the curriculum and this record is a lovely way to introduce them into your home. I have dug out my copy and spent a dreamy hour singing songs with my son.

£6.57 from Amazon.

  1. That’s so funny – Sophie’s CD reminds me of being a new mum too (not sure if all the memories are good, though!!). Tempted to see if I still have it on the IPOD…

I used to listen to it when we had a nap together – probably why it never came out second time around as I never got extra naps!

We have Lullaby too – it is played religiously every evening whilst getting Ruby ready for bed. Sophie has such a beautiful voice and its the best baby music cd I’ve found. I have others which make me crazy -either talking through the nursery rhymes or singing them in some kind of medley where half the song is missing – horrible. I did hear that Sophie was making more baby music cds but had forgotten to look – must do that now.

    Oooh, I hope she does!
