Little Scout
I must admit to being slightly baffled by the concept behind new online shop Little Scout, which only stocks ‘toys for boys’ – think robots, planes and pirates. To me, this seems like a bit of an outdated idea – many little girls I know enjoy playing with trains and cars as much as my Alfie loves cooking up a storm in his play kitchen. However, although the thinking behind it may be skewed, I do love the small selection of products the owners have curated.
There’s a real retro feel to many of the items – I wouldn’t swear that I hadn’t seen a race car like the Schylling one, £10, in photographs of my dad as a young boy. The Hello Hanna Robot Mission DIY diecut book, £6, complete with loads of stickers, would make a great gift or stocking filler. There are also lots of BG favourites in evidence, from The Original Metal Box Company’s Clifford Richards-designed robot clock, £36, and night light, £34, to Paperpod’s cardboard creations, via Donna Wilson’s woolly wonders.
It’s hard to imagine any little one not falling head over heels with these Moedik DIYnosaur lamps, £20 each – way too stylish to be scary. But my absolute number one purchase is this fleece and felt newt (pictured top), in cool grey or olive tones, handmade by Owl. Sure to become a firm friend, he’s going straight on my ‘to buy’ list for A’s birthday.
