Cool Camping is the ultimate resource when looking for a campsite which ticks your boxes. Their website and books are second to none giving you the low down on the hottest of camping hot spots. Whether you’re looking for a wild location which allows fires or a whistles and bells glampsite they’ve been there and can tell you what to expect. Their book Cool Camping: Kids has 60 family friendly campsites covering a range of prices. It gets glowing reviews although there is criticism from one Amazon reviewer that the ‘Mums’ chapter is 1950s style sexist!
I have heaps of Rough Guides and so always check out what they have to say when planning a trip. The Rough Guide to Camping in Britain has over 300 sites and each one is rigorously tested including checking the shower temperatures. It covers everything from wild camping to glamping and all in between. It is comprehensive enough for the camping novice but also offers something for the more experienced camper.
The Camping Cookbook is possibly the only cookbook you will ever need when heading out for a holiday under canvas. With an understanding of the limitations involved in providing camp food they have created a tempting selection of dishes. There are lots of one pot recipes and washing up saving strategies which are a life saver when you’re out in a field. I love the holiday treat ideas as well such as chocolate toast for breakfast – scrummy!
If you want ideas for outdoor activities then The Dangerous Book for Boys is a great reference point. With activities which seem to come straight out of the pages of an Enid Blyton adventure there is a wealth of inspiration even if some don’t suit our 0 – 5 audience. Good old Maisy has a book for every occasion and Maisy Goes Camping is a fun tale of Maisy and her friends taking a camping trip. Sweet and simple with a couple of laughs. Perfect for really young children and even new readers.
We have cool camping for kids and its a really fantastic book, there is also a cookery book in the range which is ace! Don’t forget to dig out your old Brownie Guide Handbook- lots of useful stuff in there too

Now, I would love to try camping. But I am a bit nervous having never done it as an adult, let alone with children to think about as well. I really don’t know where I’d start.
Is there a ‘first time campers’ guide somewhere that could tell me the bare minimum of what I’d need to buy… or could BG write one?!
