Nat and I spent the day at Bubble London yesterday, seeking out the most swoonsome new goodies for autumn/winter and helping to judge the Stand Out stand design competition (well done, Pili Pala!). We’ll be reporting back on hot new labels, trends and finds over the coming weeks, but here are a few photographic highlights to whet your appetites.

10 Best: Foxy Finds

Foxes are fast becoming the new owls, loved by parents and little ones alike (Alfie adores his Tootsa Macginty fox sweater), so I thought I’d round up some the foxiest finds for kids. My love for Maileg toys knows no bounds and this little fella is no exception. In fact, I’ve decided he’s going to be a companion for my newest bambino, due this summer. And he shall be called Ferdinand. £21.50, Sisters Guild.

Knit guru Donna Wilson is queen of the fox cushion. We’re all familiar with her fox face design, but I’m leaning towards this pattern, available in green or blue, from £53.60, exclusively from Heal’s.

What’s the time, Mr Fox? Easy to find out with a glance at this cheeky chap. He doesn’t tick either, so is perfect for light sleepers’ rooms. £40, HunkyDory Home.

This wallpaper by Ashley Alexander would have been perfect for my woodland-themed room ideas. Love the little hints of orange on the grey background. €130, from Turkish company Studio Nommo.

If vulpine wallpaper seems a bit much, then this cute decal by French designer Emilie Vast could be the one for you. 26, Poisson Bulle.

I’ve written about Iota Illustration before and I think ‘Two Fine Foxes’ is one of Oliver Lake’s most fabulous prints. 18, Etsy.

Here’s another one I’ll be adding to my ‘To Buy’ list – Esthex‘s Mr Morris Fox, €34.95. He’s a sly one as he’s concealing a music box, activated by pulling the string on his back. Also, check out the matching cushion and backpack.

Talking of backpacks, BG faves Skiphop have a new range of animals and one of them is, you guessed it, a fox. £24, Fairy Blossom.

I keep going on about Club Geluk, but when it comes to fox prints, this Dutch brand really knows its stuff. How divine is this red and white blanket, €69.90?

Finally, for crafty types, there’s KidsOnRoof’s 3D jigsaw puzzles depicting a friendly fox family of four. €15, Kids Love Design.

Retro Villa

Retro Villa is one of my absolute favourite vintage decor haunts and while I was pressing my nose against their virtual window the other day it occured to me that I’d neglected to share it with you.

A Danish delight, Retro Villa is packed to the gills with the kind of over the top wallpaper prints our parents were probably ripping from their walls. I love the blousy prints and love the colour blocking they use on the site. While you may not be convinced of doing an entire room in vintage wallpaper I think using it for accents in bookcases, alcoves or on furniture. Wallpapers start at 100 DKK a metre (rough conversion based on current exchange: divide by 9 so £11.11) or you can get a mixed pack of small pieces in either adult or children’s prints for 100DKK.

Not only do they have an enviable collection of wallpapers but a host of other goodies. Their retro fabric collection must be equally amazing if the cushions and quilts are anything to go by. The pricing on the soft furnishings is around £50 for a round cushion (above) and £280 for a quilt (bottom picture) so definitely in the realms of investment piece.

I can imagine designing a room around one of their textiles pieces or even one of the custom collection shelves (below) backed with an eclectic combination of wallpapers.

Even if the prices are out of your range you’re sure to find inspiration here. Their press pages alone are a marvel. Me, I just fire up Google Toolbar, hit translate and let my virtual shopping spree run wild.

10 Best: ideas for a tree-themed room

The branches may be bare at the moment, but I can’t help but think of spring and greenery. Although far removed from trad teddies and bunnies, trees are a fantastic unisex theme for a nursery – great if you don’t know what flavour you’re expecting. Designers love them as well – there’s a veritable forest of goodies out there. If you know where to look… What better starting point than Eloise Renouf’s I Love Trees limited-edition giclee print, £16.50, Etsy. The 50s palette is just divine. Actually, at that price, I might snap one up for the kitchen…

One of our favourite Scandi companies Ferm Living has this fab wooden wall lamp, £69.95, 95 Percent Shop. Check out the dinky signature bird on the treetop.

Ferm Living also has loads of amazing tree wallpapers, but I’m loving Roddy & Ginger‘s modern Logpile design, £52 per roll, in Silver Birch. Super-stylish and makes for a great neutral backdrop to brighter artworks.

Need somewhere to hang clothes (or just gorgeous things)? Look no further than P’Kolino’s cool clothes tree in zingy green, £85, Nubie.

For the floor, Designers Guild has the Pond Street Kids Tree Rug, £175.50, with its bold green and orange leaves and retro feel.

Graphic Spaces has long been a BG hot label and their solid walnut, birch and okoume bookends, including Eugene the Sapling, are currently on sale at Peanut & Pip, £42.

If your little one is very little, then RoomMate’s Forest & Friend quilted playmat/blanket is a great investment, 52, Nordic Elements. Lovely as a newborn gift, too.

Tree cushions are all over the place, but none finer than this knitted oak leaf tree by wool queen Donna Wilson, £43.50.

Another ace baby gift and a sweet sentiment (just hope it works) from Modo Creative’s wooden mobile, £19, Not on the High Street.

Finally, why not accessorise with Plan Toys’ wooden Stacking Tree, a beautiful heirloom toy that will also improve hand eye coordination. Currently on offer for 9.95 at Precious Little One.

It is chilly out so we thought we’d collect some of our favourite baby sleeping bags together. Sleeping bags are one of the best ways to keep a baby warm at night as no matter how much wiggling goes on they still stay tucked up safely.

Lasting a massive 3 – 24 months Bambino Merino sleeping bags are already working the cost-per-wear economics as they last until your baby is ready for a bed and duvet. Merino wool is widely regarded as a wonder fibre. It is soft, light and regulates body temperature meaning that you don’t need to worry about tog ratings. We’ve used them in both Summer and Winter and they still look pristine after two children and counting.

Love the retro stylings of Louis the Lion from Olive and Moss. 100% cotton and you can coordinate with other Louis print items and even a soft Louis the Lion toy.

100% cotton and still rocking the bright colours. I adore this red shooting stars bag from Green Child. Another stand out print is this bold navy stripe sleeping bag from John Lewis.

The Katvig apples print is one of my all time favourite prints for children and I am still dressing my little ones in it after all these years. This mix of reds, pinks and purples from Nubie makes me feel warm and fuzzy just looking at it.

Grobag led the revival of sleeping bags for babies and so it only seems right we include them here. Monty picked this design as his favourite from their collection.

Another huge favourite in this house are Aden and Anais‘ super soft muslin sleeping bags. The Cosy Winter version is 2.5 tog rated and the gorgeous cotton fabric gets softer with every wear and wash. I see Sisters Guild have them on offer in their Winter Sale click click…

I’m guessing this one is probably more for the pram than bedtime but I couldn’t resist the snug hood or Liberty Art Fabrics. 100% cotton and available from Zara Home Kids.

More organic fabulousness this time from Organics for Kids. I love the frog version but there is also a ladybird, dog and butterfly print. Green Child.

I couldn’t choose between the tweet tweet and brum brum print from Ella and Otto so I included them both! Gorgeous prints and would make a lovely new baby gift.

Swoonish Picks: Zara Home Kids

Zara Home Kids is one of our absolutely most favourite high street destinations where you can almost always find bright, quirky, and souped up trad pieces to add a stylish splash to kids spaces. It’s actually been quite a while since we’ve indulged our obsessive love of it, so here are just a few of our current favourites.

Lucia cotton bunting. Glorious for an instant mood and room lift. £17.99 for 3.5 metres.

Crochet coat hangers. Crochet is hot and these are so delightful, you may be tempted to nick them for your own wardrobe. Cough. Set of 3, £9.99.

Self-adhesive animales hook. Love these bold silhouettes in the hippo design shown as well as penguin, horse and bunny. £7.99 each.

Jurassic curtain. Hello dinos! Love the quirky colour mix and patterns that assure that it’ll be adored by both sexes. £39.99

Jungle coat stand. For a hanging spot packed full of cool chic, look no further. £39.99

UFOs blanket. Just one of a number of exceedingly cool cotton and wool blankets. £39.99

Hot: New cot bed duvets sets at Quick Brown Fox of Dulwich

Hello hot bedding. Quick Brown Fox of Dulwich strikes again with some new cot duvet set additions to her range of “babies’ bedding with a touch of mischief” and plenty of retro inspiration. I’m loving the Scandi-esque apples, the owls oh the owls (also in orange which sold out immediately), the retro dots and the cute and chic ladybirds. All in high quality cotton with matching pillowcase and drawstring bag, they’re £46 per set. Don’t forget, this is also the hotspot for the best cot sheets (prams, cots, cot beds, and Boori and Stokke Sleepi’s) on earth – swoop!

10 Best: ideas for a train-themed room

Choo choo! You don’t need to go anywhere near Thomas the Tank Engine to achieve a first class kids’ room that’s just the ticket. Move along down, please! Firm favourites Ferm Living come up trumps on the wallpaper front with their Tiny Train design, £59, Koko Kids.

Love these Galt room dividers – be great for creating a book nook. Not cheap at £269.95, but a lot of fun and bound to last a good few years.

If you have a genuine rail enthusiast on your hands you’re going to need to invest in a train play table or mat. I’m liking this one from Be Active, £34.95 – suitable for all popular wooden sets.

There’s a plethora of rail art around, but I’m rather taken by HappyDoodleLand’s off-the-wall interpretation with a jolly elephant acting as the train. You can also personalise it, should you like that sort of thing. About £13, plus £5 p&p to the UK, Etsy.

I know this Paul Smith wallhanging is prohibitively expensive, but I couldn’t leave it out due to its sheer amazingness. There is a royal carriage and a panda, after all… £1,295, The Rug Company.

For bedding, there can only be one option – ByGraziela‘s iconic train print. And, now they do pyjamas as well you can be all matchy matchy at bedtime. Plus the wall organiser is pretty nifty, too. £52.50 for a single set.

Yes, it’s traditional, but I can’t help loving this animal train night light. It’s also pretty hypnotic and that’s got to be a good thing at bedtime, no? £36.99, Alphabet Gifts.

This acrylic mirror, £5.99, from Lolliepop (sic) Kids is a quick, simple and cheap way to add a bit of steam power to your little one’s room.

How fabulous is this cushion? Made from an upcycled linen tea towel by London-based Hunted & Stuffed (best company name ever?) it features a vintage map of the history of British railway. £32, Folksy.

For a finishing flourish, you could do far worse than the singularly stylish wooden Milwaukee Express by Our Children’s Gorilla. Actually, this would look quite at home on my mantelpiece… £149, Rume.

New goodness at Zid Zid Kids

Zid Zid Kids is one of my all-time favourite children’s design companies as you can tell from my Label Love post last year. I’ve been hanging out and checking back for new products ever since I discovered them. Marrakech-based due Julie and Moulay have been super-busy, decking out the kids’ space in the city’s new Four Seasons hotel, but they’ve still found time for a new collection of utterly gorgeous goodies, due to be for sale on their site from today. These are my favourites… Puppets! Who doesn’t love the simplicity of hand puppets? Especially when they have ultra-adorable embroidered faces. Which is your fave? Monkey, elephant, owl, rabbit or (my personal choice) a slightly cross-looking cat? $44 for the set of five.

Baby products are a new feature for Zid Zid and I am immediately adding these booties to the list of potential pressies for my mamas-to-be. Although with shoes this amazing at such a young age, the little one is sure to grow up with expensive taste – Charlotte Olympia addict in the making? $30 per pair.

Love the unusual fabrics and minimalism of the rattles too, particularly this friendly giraffe. $22 each.

For a gift for a first-time mama, you’d be hard pushed to beat this gorgeous white blanket, hand-embroidered with the now familiar Zid Zid birdie, $64.

Finally, for bigger people (I quite fancy a pair myself) you have these divine leather parent and child camel bookends. A really fabulous way to display your most special books, $76. 10 Best: ideas for a rainbow-themed room

Red and yellow and… Who doesn’t love a rainbow? The thing I like best about them as a theme is that it’s so easy to customise pretty much anything to suit. Painted cot bars. Seven strips of fabric for a curtain. Paper lanterns. All cheap and easy updates. Check out Pinterest for some amazingly creative ideas. And, fortunately, there are loads of retail options too. Here are my favourites. This print from Dig the Earth, £32, is cool and cute in equal measure – should please children of all ages.

If you want more full-on wall decor, then may I direct you to Wall Candy Arts peel and stick wallpaper. It comes in blue or yellow, is relentlessly cheerful and reassuringly expensive at $169 for 4 rolls (plus $35 shipping from the US). It is fabulous though, no?

For a more subtle take, just add a Friends With You rainbow decal to a plain wall. A limited-edition of 20, so hurry, hurry if you’re a fan. €200, Colette.

I’m on the hunt for a super-cool height chart for Alf and I think my quest may be over. Loving the ultra-modern styling of this beauty from New Zealand-based Erupt Prints, about £21, plus about £4 p&p to the UK.

Our wooden Grimms stacking rainbow is one of the best gifts we ever received for Alfie. It looks gorgeous and is played with imaginatively and often. So I’m loving this mobile, €37.95, from our good friends at Shak-Shuka.

For the bed, it has to be Lulu & Nat’s iconic hand block-printed rainbow design. Check out their website for mega reductions on some items in the range – this quilt is £59, reduced from £143. Little Baby Company also stocks the range if you don’t find the size you need.

If you find the whole rainbow arc motif too cutesy, these sleek hooks should appeal. £87, Nordic Elements.

This completely non-cutesy chic Amy Kent rug is £400 (yikes!) but is cool enough to see as an investment piece that can be part of your home for years to come. It measures 120 x 180cm and is handmade from wool and silk.

To accompany it on the floor, how about this lush large supersoft cotton cushion? £145, Pedlars.

And at the end of the rainbow? No, not a pot of gold, but a pair of frankly amazing vintage bookends that I’m sorely tempted to buy for myself. A total bargain at £10.95, Keep It Retro.
