Art Materials for Young Toddlers

April 15, 2010 by · 3 Comments

Monty loves to draw but he also likes to chew crayons and sling them on the floor. Sadly even the jumbo Crayola crayons don’t stand up to his treatment so when Soule Mama posted her advice for drawing with little ones I was keen to check out some of the products she recommended.

I found both Stockmar Block Crayons and Lyra Ferby Short Pencils at the Waldorf inspired Myriad. While they might be more expensive than other products on the market I can vouch for them being worth spending that little bit more. The Stockmar Block Crayons in particular are exceptional. They mark very easily on the paper which is very encouraging to young artists and they withstand even Monty’s most vigorous treatment. She also suggested big pencils for small hands which Natalie raved about recently. Her fourth suggestion was for Soy Crayon Rocks which I can’t find anywhere in the UK (hint hint, UK retailers).

I have my own suggestion to add to the mix which is Djeco’s Finger Paint Tubes. The paints are nicely fluid without being runny and they don’t turn brown the instant they are mixed together. The one stand out quality for me is that they come off skin with absolutely no effort, after some using some paints which are nearly impossible to get off hands I wouldn’t go back!

Fantastic, BG is still at the stage where so want to eat more then draw.

The block crayons look great, little Oli (nearly 2) is very keen on drawing but gets frustrated with most crayons and pencils as you have to press hard. Felt tips are fun, but I then spend ages trying to find lids afterwards. These look like a good alternative.

It can be so frustrating. Have you also seen the Djeco gel pastels we wrote about? Very messy but stunning and satisfying results.
