Disclosure
In an effort to ensure transparency so that you can be assured that what you are reading is full of editorial integrity, I wanted to make clear the following:
I am not a retailer, pr agency, or brand owner. I don’t work in the sector and if I did, I would state specifically who I was working for to ensure that there was no conflict of interest or perceived bias. I am a pro-blogger and run several sites including a dating and relationship site. In my life pre-babies, I worked at various media owners in sales and marketing with my last role at a very large technology publisher.
I don’t accept payment to write about a product and if I ever did so, it would be called a ‘Sponsored Post’ and would be clearly shown in the title, just like when you open a mag or newspaper and see ‘Advertorial’..but I don’t do these.
If I have actually physically tested the product, I call it a ‘review’ and it is clearly stated in the subject and rated out of 5. I would never, ever claim that something was a review without it actually being tried out.
If I have physically seen, held, whatever the product, I also state this.
I will always explicitly state when I own something and also when I endorse a store, but writing about a product or a store is not actually an endorsement.
I do get sent products to check out, however, the great majority of these are returned as 1) my house is only so big 2) the novelty wears off very quickly when you get ‘freebies’ and 3) there is no such thing as a free meal.
As this is a design led blog featuring hot products, I only feature products that meet that criteria. If I try out something and it’s rubbish, I just won’t bother to feature it as it would be disingenuous to try to make it sound better than it actually is.
If it’s a piece of equipment, I generally (or a contributor) will try it out for somewhere between 2-4 weeks or even longer.
I do accept paid advertising on the site, however, this has absolutely zero influence on what is featured. I like to keep a clear distance between advertising and editorial, so if someone wants to advertise their product, they need to pay for that. This is my livelihood so advertising is the key way of funding the site.
I won’t feature someone who says that if I do they’ll advertise as it’s the start of a journey down a slippery slope.
The great majority – at least 85-90% of what is featured on this site has been found on my own travels or a link has been sent by a reader or mate. I don’t feature a huge amount of product that has been prompted by a press release. In fact, as time passes, I pay less and less attention to press releases.
I don’t like regurgitated content so my words (or a contributors) are my own and I won’t rehash a press release.
This site has an Amazon store which means that if you purchase something via an Amazon link, we’d get a teeny weenie percentage of the sale. There is participation in a small number of affiliate programmes, but this is seriously minor and goes towards paying for hosting – no shared hosting here – this site is on a managed server which costs a chunk of change each month! The great, overwhelming majority of links on this site are not affiliate links – that’s at least 90% and affiliate links are only used if the product was going to be featured anyway and where the link is, is the cheapest at that time.
