10 Best: Ideas for underwater-themed rooms

If you’ve got a mini fan of the life aquatic at home then read on. I’ve hunted down ten cool deep-sea goodies for children’s rooms. Firstly, you’ll be wanting wall decoration. I love the work of London-based South African designer, Luzelle van der Westhuizen’s Mengsel Design – her bicolour silkscreen prints are simple and stylish. This limited-edition whale, £40, is available in Delft Blue or Olive.

If you’re more about stickers than framed art, then Ferm Living comes to the (sea) rescue with its Waterworld wall sticker, £69.95. It comes in green, blue and red and will create a suitably oceanic atmosphere. From Dennis & McGregor.

Next, the floor. Yes, it’s pricey (£315), but a smiley octopus and crab? Who in their right mind could resist this handmade wool rug (180 x 120cm) by Swedish company Kateha. Grab yours from Kinder Room.

I was spoiled for choice when it came to cushions, but the electric blue shark silhouettes on this calico one by Yeyah swung it for me – a bargain at £16.

Pilchards don’t usually conjure up anything as glamorous as this paper garland by delectable French label Ketiketa, €5. I imagine that it will flutter fabulously in the wind and fascinate a baby. From Smallable.

Talking of entertaining babies, I can’t think of  nicer way than with this friendly eight-legged chap in teal and orange. Another treat from Ferm Living, he plays a lullaby and will set you back £29.95 from Kidsen, but you’ll have to wait until the end of the month to get your hands on him.

I’ve only recently discovered Danish (what else?) company Livingly’s fantastic mobiles and now I’m coveting all of them. This colorful shoal of fish is just the ticket. €18 from Design Delicatessen.

Hunky Dory Home‘s Whale Love lampshade, £34, will inject retro quirk into any room. Whales have such an appealing shape, they look great in pattern repeats and I love the colourway. If you’re a matchy-matchy type, pop the coordinating cushion in your basket while you’re there.

Yes, yes, I know it’s expensive (as is the shipping), but I couldn’t resist, this quilt and pillow set is so divine. I love the modernity of the fish design combined with the classic red, white and navy colour combo. About £90, plus £15 p&p from Sydney-based Alphabet Monkey.

Finally a toy to throw into the mix. I was instantly attracted to the googly eyes on this cheery fellow from Severina Kids, €35. He’s hand-knitted and super-eco – his stuffing is made from recycled plastic bottles.
